My love for track and field
Oct 4, 2024
Growing up, track and field was a constant presence in my life. I vividly remember watching the Olympics and being mesmerized by the speed and talent of Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, and Asafa Powell. Those races sparked a passion that has only grown over the years. I always admired how these athletes made it look effortless, gliding down the track like they were born to run. Their performances were a blend of sheer athleticism and mental toughness, leaving a lasting impression on me.
The Start of My Journey
In elementary school, I had friends who ran club track, and they managed to convince me to give it a shot one summer. That experience was a game-changer, even though I didn’t stick with it long-term. I loved the thrill of competition and the sense of community that came with being part of a team. However, it wasn’t until sixth grade that I really committed to the sport. I signed up for my school’s track team, and boy, did it pay off.
Junior Olympics: A Milestone Achievement
In my first year of serious competition, I qualified for the Junior Olympics—a huge milestone for any young athlete. The experience was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Competing on such a grand stage made all the hard work and training worthwhile. Over the years, I competed in the Junior Olympics three more times, and each experience taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, dedication, and sportsmanship.
UIL Meets and Texas Relays
My journey didn’t stop there. I also had the opportunity to run in three different UIL regional meets, where I faced some of the best talent in the state. The energy at those events was electric, and it pushed me to give my all. One of the highlights was attending the Texas Relays, an experience that every track athlete dreams of. The atmosphere was incredible, with athletes from all over the state coming together to showcase their talent. Those moments solidified my love for the sport and the community it creates.
Continuing the Love for Track
Even now, as I watch the Olympics, I still feel that same excitement and admiration for the athletes competing. It’s a reminder of the dedication and hard work that goes into the sport. However, it frustrates me to see how underpaid many track athletes are compared to those in other sports. They train just as hard, often sacrificing a lot for their passion. It’s disheartening that their talent and commitment often go unnoticed.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, I aspire to fill an operations or innovation role that can shine a brighter spotlight on track athletes and the sport itself. I believe there’s so much potential to elevate track and field, making it more recognized and respected. Whether it’s through better sponsorship opportunities, increased media coverage, or supporting grassroots programs, I want to contribute to a future where track athletes receive the recognition they deserve.
Conclusion
Track and field has shaped who I am today, and my love for the sport continues to drive me forward. Whether I’m on the track or watching the best compete, I’ll always cherish the thrill that track and field brings to my life. The journey has been incredible, and I look forward to being a part of the sport in a new capacity, helping to highlight the athletes who inspire so many.
