How a Stolen Bike Tire Got Me Into Mountain Biking
Oct 11, 2024
It all started with my cheap childhood bike—a Nishiki I had for years growing up. Nothing special, just enough to make the daily commute to campus. That was until one day, I came outside to find the front tire had been stolen. Yup, just the front tire. Frustrating, but also predictable since I hadn't properly locked up my bike the night before. Taking this as a sign to get a newer/nicer bike, I started searching on Facebook Marketplace, and stumbled on a deal I couldn’t pass up: a Trek Marlin 5 for $300—a bike that originally went for over $700.
The first ride on the Trek felt like I’d been living in the dark with my old bike. It was so smooth, and the build quality was on a whole different level. That bike changed everything for me. Not only was it fun to ride, but it also cut my commute time from walking 23 minutes or taking the bus (18 minutes), down to less than 7 minutes. Suddenly, getting to class wasn’t just easier, it was enjoyable.
Discovering the Fun of Mountain Biking
Once I had the Trek, riding wasn’t just about getting to campus anymore. I started taking it out to Palo Duro Canyon to hit the mountain biking trails, and it was a blast. The bike handled the dirt and rocks effortlessly, and what was once just a method of transportation turned into something I actually looked forward to doing.
If you’re thinking about getting into mountain biking or just want a new way to enjoy the outdoors, don’t hesitate! Grab a bike and find some local trails!
Commuting and Hitting the Trails
Now, my bike gets me to campus faster than anything else. The mile ride to class is a breeze compared to walking or waiting for the bus. And when I’m not commuting, I’m out enjoying the trails at Palo Duro. It’s funny to think that it all started with a stolen front tire, but now cycling has become a huge part of my life. Whether it’s a quick ride to class or a weekend mountain biking adventure, having the right bike has made all the difference.
